KINGS OF CONVENIENCE

I love this Norwegian band 'The Kings of Convenience'. I have done since the first time I saw their video clip for 'I'd Rather Dance With You' way back in 2004.  I saw the video on MTV at a friend's boyfriend's house one afternoon and immediately went out and found as much as I could about these two.  I have been a fan ever since.

A few years ago I was luck to see them play in Barcelona at the Poble Espanyol.  The whole night was completely magical.  It was a warm summer night, we were drinking Spanish beers and as the sun went down the fairy lights came on and these guys played about 3 hours of pure loveliness!

They are playing at the Laneway Festival in Melbourne next Sunday the 3rd of February which I am going to - whoopee!  I can't wait to see them again!  Frankie magazine did an interview with Eirik here.

White Light/White Heat - Lawless

This week I watched the film 'Lawless' and loved it.  It was quite violent and gruesome - not my usual reasons for liking a film, but it was so bloody that it left me thinking about it for days after watching it!  It's directed by John Hillcoat (who also directed The Proposition) and the screenplay was written by Nick Cave.  Guy Pearce's character is incredibly bad and creepy and he plays it so well.  It's well worth checking out!

Today I'm enjoying listening to the soundtrack, including this little cover of The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat,  sung by Ralph Stanley in this version....

Oh, he's so scary...especially the hair!!!

'Dancing Barefoot' First Aid Kit / Patti Smith

A few days ago Chris and I were driving back from our great New Years getaway on Phillip Island listening to RRR radio and we were delighted to hear the Swedish band, First Aid Kit on the show selecting artists and songs that influence them.  It was great and I really liked their choice of music.

One thing they mentioned was how they played a Patti Smith song, Dancing Barefoot, at the Polar Music awards the year that Patti Smith was awarded (see clip above).  If you watch this clip you can see Patti Smith actually cries.  It's lovely!

Another song that I liked 'Save Me' by Aimmee Mann.  Lovely!

Taken by Trees

I used to love the Sweedish band, The Concretes so when I heard a familiar sounding voice on triple R the other morning, I was delighted to find out that the lead singer of The Concretes Victoria Bergsman has created some solo songs I was delighted.  She's going by the name 'Taken by Trees' and I love it. x

Anna Calvi

On Wednesday this week I went to see the truly amazing Anna Calvi at The Corner in Melbourne.  The show left me in complete awe of her.  She was so good...honestly, I'm not sure how to describe it with only words!  She is a bit like an opera rock singer that plays electric guitar like a harp, that looks like a vampire flamenco dancer.  She was amazing!  Here are two of my favourite songs of her....

Suzanne and I....
and Desire...

I first listened to Anna Calvi because I read somewhere that Nick Cave was a fan of her stuff, so I thought I would check her out.  I can see why he liked her...she's kind of a bit dark and sexy just like Mr Cave.

I think that she has a standard uniform for performing...red shirt, black trousers, red lipstick and hair slicked back.  She's cool!

'I Say Fever' by Ramona Falls...an awesome animated film clilp!

My husband just showed me this brilliant film clip for Ramona Falls' 'I Say Fever' film clip, and I love it!  It looks like it is made up from old Victorian illustrations and is very, very clever!  I especially love the part where the birds take the humans' heads off and they turn into animal heads!
Check it out....

This beardy man is very cute....

This is the part I like best...

Brother by Mat Corby...just lovely!

I saw this on the Frankie magazine blog a few weeks ago.  I hadn't heard of Mat Corby before and I'm a little bit in love.  Isn't this song just lovely?! Isn't he just lovely?!

This song is on Triple J's Hottest 100 list - and I'm off to vote!

An Argument With Myself...a very cute song!

I love this little song, especially because it is based in Melbourne!  Isn't it fun when a place you know is in a song, book, film, TV show etc...it makes you feel kind of special!  Enjoy! x

Lana Del Rey

I love this song, and the video is pretty good too.  Here is the beautiful girl who sings it...she describes herself as "gangster Nancy Sinatra", but I think she's selling herself short.  She's my new girl crush for sure!
